Did Your Check Engine Light Come On? Here’s Why It Did

The check engine light has long been a confusing item for many consumers. While it’s a firm indication that something might be wrong with your car, it’s vague in its description. A check engine light can mean many things, some more serious than others. Today we’re going to go over some of these issues in hopes that we can shed a beacon on this light of mystery.

Oxygen Sensor

Your car’s oxygen sensors are in place to ensure that your engine is running efficiently. Any car with a gasoline-powered engine releases emissions, which are closely monitored by these sensors. If the ratio of air and fuel becomes unbalanced, your car’s fuel efficiency can become compromised.

Ignition Coil

A car’s ignition takes an electrical current from the battery and ignites the spark plugs, allowing the engine to turn over properly. Because this happens every time you power your vehicle on, a great deal of wear and tear occurs.

Spark Plugs

The spark plugs in your car are one of the most critical components of your vehicle’s electrical system. If the plugs or the wires connected to them fail, your engine can start idling erratically and damage your vehicle’s powertrain.

Air Flow Sensor Malfunction

Similar to your vehicle’s oxygen sensors, your airflow sensor monitors and measures the proper air ratio allowed into your engine. If the sensor can no longer function properly, airflow is hindered, and your car’s fuel efficiency will decrease.

Faulty Exhaust & Gas Circulation

A variety of ports and valves regulate your car’s exhaust and gas. This controls your vehicle’s emissions that it releases. If you hear your engine misfire or notice a decrease in your vehicle’s MPG, this most likely indicates a problem with this or your vehicle’s emissions system.

Battery Charging Issues

Depending upon the geographic location that you live in, car batteries can wear themselves out rather quickly. If a battery isn’t charging properly or the alternator isn’t effectively providing a current to charge your battery, then there’s a possibility that this will trigger your check engine light to come on.
