Safety Tips for Driving in the Rain

Driving in the rain can be scary and here in Florida, our summers are notorious for spontaneous afternoon showers and storms.  It’s important to know how to keep yourself and others on the road safe during these potentially disastrous conditions so we’ve put together a guide with all the tips you’ll need to get through the rainy season safely!

One of the most important things you can do when driving in the rain is slow down!  Even if you feel comfortable, wet roads mean skidding and hydroplaning.  Slowing down gives you more control and it will be easier to brake without sliding.  If you do end up hydroplaning, don’t slam on your breaks!  Gently turn your wheel in the direction you want to go – it may take several attempts to get your vehicle back on track so remain as calm as possible.  You can lose control of your car in as little as three inches of water, so if you aren’t sure how deep a puddle really is, don’t attempt driving through it.  A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t see the markings on the road, it isn’t safe to drive.

Staying safe in a storm is also easier in a car that’s been well maintained.  You should clean the outside and inside of your windows and windshields at least once a month.  Make sure your wiper blades aren’t worn down and ensure you have washer fluid every week.  These simple tasks will improve visibility.  You also want to ensure that your turn signals, headlights, and taillights are working properly.  When you’re caught in heavy rain you want to turn on your lights, not your brights.  Brights will reflect off the water and lower visibility for other drivers on the road.  Don’t let your tire pressure get too low and check the tread on your tires.

Finally, hold off on trips you don’t absolutely need to take while it’s raining.  Unless there’s an emergency or you get caught in the rain away from home, there is nothing wrong with waiting for it to pass.  If you do have to drive, use a route you are familiar and comfortable with.  Asphalt can look dry even when it’s soaking wet and slippery, so be sure to keep that in mind as well.
